Natural Gas Measurement Technician

Position Description 

Responsible for the installation, maintenance, operation and accuracy of custody transfer natural measurement and control facilities

Essential duties and responsibilities:

• Install, inspect, test, adjust, maintain, operate, troubleshoot, repair, calibrate, and remove natural gas measurement, control and regulation equipment, as well as SCADA, and gas quality equipment 

• Detect measurement error and correct volumes as needed and provide supporting documentation. 

• Monitor gas volumes using the established corporate measurement system, insure all corrections are applied and proper qualities are applied 

• Interpret and apply electrical and electronic schematics pertaining to electronic flow measurement equipment and associated natural gas measurement devices. 

• Assess all facets of assigned facilities to insure accurate product measurement and report lost and unaccounted for gas. Must display a high degree of ownership of the established corporate goals

• Perform audits of natural gas custody transfer and control data when necessary

• Responsible for the general upkeep and maintenance of all facilities and equipment as dictated by company policy and established management practices. 

• Oversee the construction and/or maintenance activities performed by third parties.

• Identify, report, and correct safety and environmental concerns

• Complete appropriate electronic and physical documentation for all activities. Maintenance of detailed an accurate records is expected and required. 

• Accomplish all assigned tasks in compliance with Company standards, procedures, and regulatory and tariff requirements 

• Mentor fellow employees when the opportunity to do so arises 

• Demonstrate performance strive for operational excellence

• Regular and predictable attendance is required

Position Requirements 

Minimum requirements:


• Associates degree in a technical field, or equivalent experience

Experience & specific knowledge:
• 3-5 years’ experience with natural gas measurement and related theory and hardware.

• Basic computer skills - MS Office – emphasis on Excel & Word, Windows operating systems, and proprietary company software

• Basic math skills required (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals) 

• Working knowledge of the National Electric Codes & NFPA70e is expected and required. 

• Knowledge of and experience in safe handling practices of flammable gases, liquids and high pressure systems

• Experience with and knowledge of electronic test instruments such as digital multi-meters, HART communicators, HEISS and dead-weight calibrators. 

•Knowledge of gas chromatography – as applied to natural gas measurement. 

• Knowledge of mechanical, pneumatic, and electronic equipment used in gas measurement and control

- Knowledge of AGA, API, and GPA measurement standards (Such as AGA 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 etc; 
GPA STD 2261, API-521)

• Knowledge of DOT regulations that pertain to measurement (49CFR Part 192). 

• Functional knowledge of measurement bias and error.

• Ability to troubleshoot pneumatic, electronic, and electrical controls and equipment. 

Certifications, licenses, registrations:

• Possess a valid driver's license and meet company insurability requirements

• May be required to possess a commercial driver’s license, drive a company commercial vehicle and comply with all commercial vehicle regulations

• May be required to achieve and maintain certifications as required to perform job duties

Physical demands:
• Ability to use hand tools and equipment, repetitive hand use such as simple grasp and twisting motion included

• Physical ability to lift as much as 75lbs, bend/stoop, kneel and climb stairs/ladders. Must be able to walk and retain balance on uneven / rough surfaces. 

Working conditions: 
• May work in low-lit areas
• Must be able to withstand extreme weather conditions
• Must be able to frequently enter confined spaces, climb to and work from elevated platforms, ladders, and walkways, etc.
• Depending upon the location and workload, some overnight travel will be required
• Must be able to respond to and address callouts and emergencies outside of regular business hours – including nights, weekends and Holidays.

Preferred education, experience, certifications, competencies, skills, and abilities
above the minimum requirements; not required but advantageous in this position:

• Knowledge of company policies and practices, and regulatory and tariff requirements.

• Experience with Bristol ControlWave EFM, Daniels US measurement equipment, Daniels gas chromatographs, 

•BS in engineering, physical science or other technical field.
