Amazon - Making the Cloud Greener

Amazon Web Services is committed to running their business in the most environmentally friendly way possible.   According to their website, Amazon Web Services has a long-term commitment to achieve 100% renewable energy usage for their global infrastructure footprint.

This week, Amazon announced a massive new renewable energy project dubbed Amazon Wind Farm Texas. The farm, which will be built in West Texas' Scurry County, will hold over 100 massive wind turbines with a diameter larger than the wingspan of a Boeing 747, according to the company.

The project is expected to generate 1,000,000 megawatt hours of wind energy every year, enough to power 90,000 American homes for a year.

The Texas wind farm, to open in late 2017, is Amazon’s fifth renewable-energy project

150 megawatt wind farm in Benton County, Indiana

Expected to generate approximately 500,000 megawatt hours of wind power annually

 

Amazon Solar Farm US East

80 megawatt solar farm in Accomack County, Virginia

Expected to start generating approximately 170,000 megawatt hours of solar power annually

 

Amazon Wind Farm US East

208 megawatt wind farm in Perquimans and Pasquotank Counties North Carolina

Expected to start generating approximately 670,000 megawatt hours of wind energy annually

 

Amason Wind Farm US Central

100 megawatt wind farm in Paulding County, Ohio

Expected to start generating approximately 320,000 megawatt hours of wind energy annually

 

The energy generated by Amazon Wind Farm US Central, Amazon Wind Farm US East, Amazon Solar Farm US East and Amazon Wind Farm Fowler Ridge will be responsible for delivering more than 1.6 million MWh of additional renewable energy annually into the electric grids that supply current and future AWS Cloud data centers. The energy produced from these projects is enough to power roughly the equivalent of 150,000 U.S. homes annually.
